Jesus Keep Me Near The Cross

It is natural, as we approach Easter, to have our thinking centered on the cross and what it means to every believing heart. I have had this hymn playing in my head this week. I suppose it is no surprise that Fanny Crosby wrote this one too.

She collaborated with William Doane once again. This time it was his music that came first. Fanny wrote the lyrics after hearing the melody.

Jesus, keep me near the cross,
There a precious fountain,
Free to all, a healing stream
Flows from Calvary's mountain.

(Refrain)
In the cross, in the cross,
Be my glory ever,
Till my ransomed soul shall find
Rest beyond the river.

Near the cross, a trembling soul,
Love and mercy found me;

There the Bright and Morning Star
Shed His beams around me.

Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day
With it's shadows o'er me.

Near the cross! I'll watch and wait,
Hoping, trusting ever,
Till I reach the golden strand,
Just beyond the river.

Galatians 6: 14
"But may it never be that I should boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world."
