As You Have Been Forgiven

We forgive
As we have been forgiven.

He came into our lives
faceless, a shadow
that threatened a loved one
causing fear and worry.

Thoughts of grace and mercy
did not come,
Only the desire to punish
and seek justice.

The word came:
Pray for him.
Asking what seemed impossible
Yet knowing it was right.

Words formed out of obedience
from an unwilling heart
In time became sincere
pleas for blessing.

We never saw, never knew,
But something powerful happened
When we chose to forgive,
As we have been forgiven.

"and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us."
Matthew 6:12
"And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins" (Mark 11:25).
"But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;"
Matthew 5:44

  1. He set the standard for forgiveness -- and what he forgave was huge compared to the little he asks from us. Good poem, Linda.

  2. yes it does, chains are broken and freedom is found when we choose to forgive...

  3. Wonderful
we all think it is so easy to forgive
    then something comes up
    that is really hard
and we have to really look at our heart
    is forgiveness really so easy?
    but it is worth it.

  4. That is a beautiful poem. I don't know why it is so hard for us to forgive others when God forgives us for so much more. I try not to hold onto things and hold a grudge, but it is so hard and once someone has lost my trust it is very hard to get it back. I can forgive things done to me way faster than things done to my chidren.
