"Like A River Glorious"

I have had some anxious moments this past week. There were times I felt overwhelmed - stomach churning, heart pounding, anxiety filling my heart. My thoughts kept running ahead, anticipating things that might never come to pass. I was outwardly okay and inwardly totally out of control.

How is it that at the moment we need it most, wisdom seems to fly out the window? All of the things we know to be true are suddenly overshadowed by our circumstances, and faith that flourished in the sunshine dies in the darkness.

And the Father waits; waits for us to come and take what He holds out to us with open hands. He promises peace and rest; He promises to be with us; He pledges His love with the blood of His beloved Son.

When I slow and walk into His open arms I find it all. He is absolutely faithful.

This is the hymn He put on my heart this week:

"Like A River Glorious"

1. Like a river glorious
Is God's perfect peace,
Over all victorious
In its bright increase;
Perfect, yet it floweth
Fuller ev'ry day,
Perfect, yet it groweth
Deeper all the way.

2. Hidden in the hollow
Of His blessed hand,
Never foe can follow,
Never traitor stand;
Not a surge of worry,
Not a shade of care,
Not a blast of hurry
Touch the spirit there.

3. Ev'ry joy or trial
Falleth from above,
Traced upon our dial
By the Sun of Love;
We may trust Him fully
All for us to do
They who trust Him wholly
Find Him wholly true.

Stayed upon Jehovah,
Hearts are fully blest
Finding, as He promised,
Perfect peace and rest.

Lyrics: Frances Ridley Havergal

I found a great deal of biographical information on Frances R. Havergal. You can read about her here.

  1. Another of my favorites - and another one we don't get to sing any more.

  2. Linda, I don't know this song at all, but the lyrics are wonderful. I looked up her bio and she was a fascinating woman. Wow! to be that strong in my faith!

    I'm praying that this week is more solid for you. Hope hubby is feeling better and that you can get some rest. Blessings.

  3. Finding, as He promised,
    Perfect peace and rest.

    good ending to a good song.

    Love to you.

  4. "When peace like a river" ... praying that peace for you and yours.

  5. Your post described how I've been feeling and those feelings even kept me from attending my granddaughter's graduation this weekend. Now I have such a guilty feeling, knowing I can't take it back. I feel such a connection to you and Ann. Sometimes I feel this angst to be my "thorn in the flesh".

    Thank you for posting these lovely hymns; I didn't know this one either but it's very pretty.

  6. Those hymns are so full of faith, encouragement, and wisdom. I had not thought of this one for a long time. My father has been and still is a worship leader. That was one song we sang often at church.

    I pray that the enemy's attempt to steal your peace with his fear will fail and cease. Whatsoever is good...etc. think on these things. Think of God's power, his love, his character...remember He will never leave you nor forsake you.

    You are loved and I stand with you in this hour. You are his princess and He is looking out for you for your good.

  7. linda, i'm crying. i've been battling anxiety for the past two weeks. it's been keeping me awake at night. i slowly read through these words, trying to absorb them. thank you for this beautiful message. please pray it sinks deep. i love you and your encouragement sister. praying peace for you too... standing with christie, above, and commanding God's angels to protect us in Jesus' name. love e.
