Jesus Paid It All

Elvina Hall sat quietly in her customary pew as her Pastor prayed. It was a Sunday morning in the Spring of 1865. Thoughts of the miracle of salvation filled her mind and heart. When the prayer was over, she picked up a hymnal and on a blank page began to write. Here is the story behind the beautiful hymn "Jesus Paid It All."

Jesus Paid It All

I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”

Refrain

Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

For nothing good have I
Whereby Thy grace to claim,
I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb.

Refrain

And now complete in Him
My robe His righteousness,
Close sheltered ’neath His side,
I am divinely blest.

Refrain

Lord, now indeed I find
Thy power and Thine alone,
Can change the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone.

Refrain

When from my dying bed
My ransomed soul shall rise,
“Jesus died my soul to save,”
Shall rend the vaulted skies.

Refrain

And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete,
I’ll lay my trophies down
All down at Jesus’ feet.

Refrain

I pray the words of this timeless hymn draw you close to the Father who loves you deeply,
Linda

  1. A wonderful story that shows how God does orchestrate our lives if we let Him.
I vaguely remember this one---not enough to come up with the tune, so I'm always happy when you supply it. :>)
Beautiful words(so true) and melody and excellent singing.

  5. I love these old hymns better than any other music! They take me back to a little girl sitting beside her mother who had a beautiful alto voice and has gone on to be with Christ.

  6. This one, Linda, this one might be my very favorite. (Well, ok, along with a few others.) But this one is complete gospel in just about every line.

    Jesus paid it all.

An aside, so you can laugh at my expense this evening. We sang this one in church a few weeks ago. After the service, one of the musicians (a sweet friend) came back to the media booth and sheepishly told me I had a typo, knowing I'd want to correct it but not wanting me to feel like a ninny. She said, "On that one slide it says, 'Can change the leopard's spots.' I don't think you want it to say that."

I ended up looking like a ninny after all, since I stared at her for good 30 seconds before I figured out why that was wrong. They're patient with me at my church. Thank heavens. :)
