Advent - Day 10

"God gives the commandments to us - and God gives God to keep the commandments for us. God gives us the commitment of love at the top of Sinai, and He staggeringly keeps our commitment to love at the top of Calvary." (The Greatest Gift)

On this tenth day of Advent, Ann brings us to Sinai and the giving of the commandments. She reminds us to keep God's commandments "that it might go well with them and their children forever!" (Deut. 5:29) A precious promise from our Heavenly Father.

Then she writes:

"Confess the ways you've broken God's commandments."

Oh my. I have failed in so many ways. It's hard to know where to begin. The one commandment that comes quickly to mind is "You shall have no other gods before me."

I haven't constructed gods made of stone or carved in wood. I haven't built altars in my home or out in the flower garden. But I have erected altars in my heart and bowed down to other gods of my own making over and over again.

For the most part none of those gods was evil in and of themselves. They only became a problem when I allowed them to captivate me and draw me away from the Lord. Some of them were good things, but taken to an extreme (as I am prone to do) they did me great harm in the long run.

I learn the lesson over and over again. He must be my first love, and then all will go well. It is a commandment written in love, for my good.

Blessings,
Linda
